This is a hardware compatibility list ONLY for OEM desktop computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a desktop. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your x86 desktop computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.4.8 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Kernels are available for most configured machines
- ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
- Please add hardware into tables.
- This is for 10.4.8 builds only.
Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)
For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!
Note: Please add whether your device supports QE, Quartz Extreme, graphics. Try playing a movie with Quicktime Player.
See the x86 software page for programs you can run without Rosetta.

[edit] Acer
[edit] Acer Aspire T160
- Method:
Install with Mac OS X 10.4.8 AMD SSE3 test1 DVD
1/ uncheck everything except essential system and your native language (still need to set it manually once OS X is installed)
Install
reboot (still needs to manually shutdown)
2/ Set up your hackintosh
3/ update to latest semthex kernel using the auto updater (available here http://forum.insanelymac.com.cob-web.org:8888/index.php?showtopic=33259)
patch with myzar patchers 1 & 2 (maybe only the second is needed) (also available here http://forum.insanelymac.com.cob-web.org:8888/index.php?showtopic=33259)
4/ install nv40hal.pkg from the same install disk (Mac OS X 10.4.8 AMD SSE3 test 1 DVD)
Enjoy !!
- Hardware:
Acer Aspire T160 Athlon X2 3800+
GeForce 7600 GT PCIe
Realtek RTL 8139C
1Gb DDR 400
80Gb ATA 133
System is really fast and stable. QE/CI work great.
SSE2 + SSE3, dual core (FSB seen as 400Mhz instead of 200Mhz)
- what works perfect :
ATA
USB 1.1
FireWire
Graphics
Ethernet (with PCI adapter)
Onboard Audio (2.0 mode)USB Audio 5.1 (Hercules Muse Pocket LT)
all smooth as silk
- what does not work :
USB 2 (only works as USB 1.1)
Nforce 410/430 (SATA/Ethernet)
EDIT : SATA can be activated if you insert your deviceID (026610de & 026710de) in viaata.kext/in.plist but it's still not working good, causes freeze..
Audio 5.1 is bugged. You can set the 6 channels with MIDI utility, but channels does not output correctly, seem to switch from time to time
EDIT : using USB audio 5.1 (hercules muse pocket LT) works fine, native support in OS X
Does not reboot. (shutdown is fine)

[edit] Asus P4B533
I Installed JaS 10.4.8 successfully on this machine. The only thing I would watch out for is the video card you use. I tried with an ATI card and had some problems, but as soon as I switched to an nVidia card, it worked. I flashed the system BIOS on the P4B-533 board to the latest beta version. I don't know if this is required, but if you experience problems, you might want to try it out.
- Method:
Install with Jas 10.4.8 AMD+Intel SSE2 Beta 2 DVD
Customized install, Installed the Intel libraries by JaS along with the nVidia driver (Different on most DVDs, mine was called Titan)

ide hd. dont know about sata. ide dvd drive. 1gb ddr sd ram. intel pentium 4.Method: 10.4.8 jas sse2, sse3 dvd. Everything works. If audio doesnt work, plug the cord into a different jack then the input. try the output or other ones.
Method: iPC 10.5.6 leopardeverything works: Sata works , IDE HD dont know but probably yes. got 1gb ram, dvd works, internet works after booting one time with -f bootflag. audio works when output in black not green. video works with ATI card that comes with the computer ( only standard resolution did not find any kexts yet i will search for them) got some kernel panics at first but reinstalled with other settings and it booted and works very well!!
[edit] Dell Optiplex 520GX
This system was perfect for 10.4.8. The only thing that didn't work was the sound and NIC. The NIC works after installing the driver fix. Full 10/100/1000 support. The sound has no fix at this time that I could find. Onboard video works like my intel Mac at work. I use an USB Soundblaster soundcard. It works perfect, and is instantly supported with surround sound. I didn't have to edit any files. Just install the drivers provided on here.
[edit] Dell PowerEdge 400sc
Onboard NIC: It just worked.Onboard Sound: The onboard sound chip on the 400sc is the Analog Devices AD1980. All you need to do to get this to work is edit one character in one file. :-) Open the AppleAC97Audio.kext file and drill down to the Contents/Plugins/AppleAC97CodecAD198x.kext/Contents/Info.plist. Edit this file and search for ADS75. Change the number 5 to a 0. It should be ADS70 after you're done. Save the file, repair permissions and ownership, etc. Search the forums if you don't know how to do this. Then reboot. You don't have to change the speaker settings either. It will just work after you reboot.USB worked on install from CD but failed after that. I had to install the non-'Log' file USB update from http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html. Get the latest version and install the version that doesn't have 'Log' in the filename.

P4 2.4 (2.53) Ghz, 256Mb, 40gig HD, Lite-on DVD, Nvidia 5200, Linksys WMP54GS, Logitech Internet pro KB&mouse. SERVER: with no built in sound! Installed TubGirl 10.4.8 everything works fine. NIC(Intel Pro Gigabit) works, USB works(I have to Plug-In after boot just like on my iBooks). Nvidia 5200 works (didn't choose updated driver): also s-video works to TV. I used Broadcom method from Genius bar for wifi. Safari needed Rosetta for Flash and Java. Boots in 16 sec!
[edit] Dell PowerEdge 1420
- Had to 'Partition' rather than 'Erase' the disk or OSX wouldn't boot.- Do not install the 10.4.4 login window patch or the system will hang- System works fine. The ATI Rage 128 PCI card is detected but only runs at 1024x768x16.- There is no sound on this machine to get working. - Ethernet is not detected.

BIOS: changed video memory from 1Mb to 8MbInstallation went smoothly. Needed AppleIntel8255x.kext for LAN to work. Usual 'Graphics Mode' and 'MIDI Setup' changes. Everything seems to work fine!
Problem with audio (I did usual 'Midi Setup'): sound is ok in system and itunes, but no sound in Garageband and can't ear my interlocutor in skype and perhaps same issues in other apps.

Celeron 2.2GHz, 768MB RAM, onboard sound, NOT USING ONBOARD VIDEO (My particular machine I picked up cheap due to onboard video giving no output, I installed a PCI Nvidia FX5200).
Installed using JaS 10.4.8, did the usual install and selected Nvidia video drivers.
Install went through fine and booted to X easily. Onboard sound works straight off, onboard ethernet not working - havn't had a play with this, I just installed a cheap PCI ethernet card to work around this.

1. Restart installation from DVD
2. Open Disk Utility
3. Partition the drive
Note: Do *NOT* select the 'Erase' option as this is what causes the problem.
4. Reinstall the OS.
My computer came with the ATI Radeon VE AGP video card. I use it because it supports dual monitors. However, it is not compatible. I removed the card and plugged one of my monitors into the on-board video port and it works fine -- a little slow, but fine. Audio doesn't work. If video is only black and white you must change the video buffer setting in the bios, it must be on 8 mb.

- Upgraded BIOS to A09
- Installed JaS 10.4.6
- Using Logitech Mouse, so wierd double-click bug, use other mouse or do not update past 10.4.6- Updated to 10.4.7 then 10.4.8 with JaS updates.
My computer has a PowerColor ATI Radeon 9800SE, so image tearing was apparent. Minimised this with workarounds. Onboard sound working fine. Machine is P4 3.06 HT (no HT support on motherboard) SSE2. OpenGL and CoreImage, Quartz Extreme all working. SSE2 bugs in iPhoto, DVD-Player, and OpenGL bugs, especially when exiting apps. iTunes bug, fixed with workarounds. Apart from that, system is very responsive and rock-solid stable.

[edit]Dell Optiplex GX270
There are different versions of the Dell Optiplex GX270. The smaller ones have lower clockspeeds, the bigger ones support Hyper Threading.
A first install:
Devicetype: Dell Optiplex GX270 'Small Form-Factor Computer' (H 9.0 cm W 31.9 cm D 35.4 cm)
Bios version: 0a6.
Processor: P4 2.4 Ghz
System clock: 533 Mhz.
Memory: 256mb
Harddisk: IDE 40Gb.
Method: Native install, 10.4.8 JaS DVD
Result: Everything seems to run fine and stable. Sound in/out works, integrated networkcard works. Using this system with the harddisk in an external USB 2.0 casing, and boot from there works fine too, although somewhat slower.
Minor issues:
- 'About this Mac' makes the finder crash, this is covered in the forum.
- CI and QE are not supported by the integrated videocard.
Hcl Me Drivers
- Standard resolution is 1024x786, this issue is covered elsewere.
- 256mb is not enough for OSx 10.4. Nevertheless it runs relatively smooth, and it boots in only 25 secs!
An other install:
Devicetype: Dell Optiplex GX270 'Small Desktop Computer' (H 10.6 cm W 38.9 cm D 43.2 cm)
Bios version: 0a3.
Processor: P4 2.6 Ghz with Hyper Threading
System clock: 800 Mhz.
Memory: 768mb
Harddisk: IDE 40Gb.
Method: I used the harddisk of the install above, build in an external USB 2.0 casing. I boot using f12 (and some change in the BIOS setup)
Result: Not usable at first!. Grayscale UI, hardly readable texts. The video buffer in the bios setup was set to 8mb, so in this case, that was not the solution. After a bios update to version 0a7 the UI became normal.
An other issue: This system was not very stable. Several applications crash after a while. Now I disabled the Hyper Threading function of the CPU in the BIOS, so this machine behaves like a 'Small Form-Factor Computer' model of the GX270. This seems to solve the problem (until now). There may be a more elegant solution, but first let us see how stable this is.
Yet another install:
Devicetype: Dell Optiplex GX270 'Large Tower'
Bios version: 0a7
Chipset: Intel 865G
Processor: P4 3.2GHz with SSE3 and Hyper Threading (though 'About This Mac' states 3.6GHz)
Memory: 512MB
Network Controller: Intel PRO Gigabit
Video Graphics Controller: Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2
Hard Disk: 2x 80GB IDE, 160GB IDE
Method: JaS installation DVD 10.4.8 Intel w/SSE2 & SSE3 Garmin gpsmap 60cx driver for mac.
Result: Using on-board Video and NIC. Very stable, though not as fast as I hoped. Could always use more RAM, but for the most part it's pretty fast and only boots in 20 seconds.
Issues:- 'About This Mac' would crash the Finder, 10.4.4 loginwindow.app resolved this issue (this came with JaS 10.4.9 combo update).- NIC much slower than 10Mbps, still unresolved.
Another Install:
Devicetype: Dell Optiplex GX270, small desktop
Bios version: 0a7
Processor: P4 2.8 GHz with SSE2 and Hyper Threading
Hard Disk: 40 Gbyte IDE
OSX 10.4.8 JaS SSE2/SSE3 install
Important increase the graphic memory allocation from 1Mbyte to 8Mbyte in the BIOS setting
otherwise graphic is only 1 bit black and white
Hcl Computers Driver For Mac
No problems with the install. Network and Audio working.
Another build:
Slimline Optiplex GX 270
Bios version 0a7
P4 2.4 (no HT)
1 GB (4x256) ram
120gb hdd (PATA - but mobo has (1) SATA)
Onboard video/Nic/Sound
OSx 10.4.8 JaS SSE2/SSE3 install
I first tried the uphuck 10.4.9 DVD - no success after multiple tries. It would lock up when attempting to load the kernel after the install completed. JaS worked on the first try (increased video allocation to 8mb before installing uphuck). Same results as the top install - CI and QE are not supported by the integrated videocard, but I will work on this some more. Sound worked, and it recognized the onboard NIC (have no connected to the router yet to test speeds). About this mac causes it to crash, and sleep does not work. Boots quickly (20-25 secs), and I will test photoshop and final cut on this in the coming weeks.

Method: Native install with switches -v -x (verbose and safe mode regarding video card), DVD: JaS Mac OS X 10.4.8
Hardware: Intel 865G motherboard chipset and Integrated Intel Extreme® Graphics 2 , Intel® PRO Gigabit2 NIC , onboard AC97 sound, 40gb PATA internal IDE, P4 2.8GHz, 512mb RAM
Hcl Drivers Download
Comments: Everything works fine, NIC, Sound,17' LCD has slight waves, other rock solid (turned of HT). Graphics are not accelerated and will not go above 1024x768. Update bios to latest version otherwise display is scrambled. Rosetta works great. I think AGP Ati card will boost the system. No issues. .

Native installation, first I installed from a JAS SSE2/SSE3, Intel/AMD,PPF Defiant,Biker880.ICH7r patched disk.
Hardware: 2.8 HT CPU, (HT enabled) 2 gig DDR400, 250 gig PATA HD onboard AC97 sound, onboard Intel 10/100VE network, Intel 865G onboard graphics. Pioneer DVD-RW, monitor is a Dell 17' flatscreen CRT, Dell USB KB & MOUSE
install was strait forward, everthing onboard works great with this disk except I had to enable the 8 meg video buffer in the bios to get the video to work. Video goes up to 1024x768, No CI or QE but I am working on that.
after uphuck 10.4.9 r3 install: I could not get the onboard NIC working so I installed a realtek 8139, system seems a little buggier than the JAS 10.4.8 install. I did not add any apps yet or get CI or QE on the 865G graphics yet. I will come back and add more later G_M. . . .

[edit] Alternate attempt 2007-05-09
Native install using JaS 10.4.8 Intel/AMD PPF1 PPF2. DVD on PATA primary master, HD on first SATA. Check Intel GMA 900 and GMA 950 (even though we don't have a 950-- if you install w/o 950, you get blue screen at boot). Install as usual. After install, I updated to 10.4.9 manually using the delta updater method.
After install, this works out of the box: SATA, PATA, USB, Sound
Broken: GMA 900 (no QE/CI), Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet 5711.
To fix GMA: Download Diabolik's fixer package - Install it, then as root, move any kexts in /System/Library/Extensions that say GMA950 out of the folder. Repair permissions. Reboot.
I was able to get Broadcom to work in 10.4.8 using these instructions. But I could not set the MAC address or else it would freeze. My workaround was to connect to a router running DD-WRT and have the router configured to be a client bridge to the real wireless network. The packets from the DellMac take on the MAC address of the DD-WRT router and it works.
![Download brother driver for mac Download brother driver for mac](/uploads/1/2/6/8/126894336/801583172.jpg)
Unfortunately, I was not able to get the Broadcom working in 10.4.9 at all-- it would freeze during boot. I decided to install a D-Link DWL-G520 instead (Atheros chipset). This has a low profile bracket included in the box, so I could install it in my machine since mine is a SFF case.

- Sigmatel STAC9200 - generated from codec file using AppleHDAPatcher v1.13 (Input/Output all working!)
- Integrated PRO/100 VE Ethernet (AppleIntel8255x.kext no edits)When you download dont install that kext. Select show contents, the real kext and some instructions are inside.

Method: Installed JaS AMD-Intel SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 DVD.
The onboard video DOES NOT work even when you change the buffer in the bios to 8Mb. I don't know what people are doing to get it to work, but I could not. All I could get was virtually unreadable text in 2 or 3 shades of gray. I went out and bought a GeForce FX 5200 256Mb PCI card, as the chassis only has 3 PCI slots, no PCIe and no AGP.
To avoid the problem where rebooting shows a blinking cursor and does not load the OS fixed by partitioning before the install,
select Utilities > Disk Utility from the first screen with a top menu.
Go to the Partition tab. (middle tab)
Select your Hard Disk (the whole Hard Disk, not just a partition).
Select “1 partition”from the dropdown. It's the 2nd item in the dropdown after 'free space'. All your space should be allocated in the graphic.
Give your new partition a name and partition the drive.
Click OK when it asks to erase everything.
I selected only the following from the install - Essential System Software, Additional Fonts, X11, Intel, 10.4.4 login window, Nvidia n40 + Titan
Nvidia n40+Titan is necessary for the 5200 card.
Built in Ethernet not working. solution here
Everything else worked right out of the box, except I don't think my A: drive is recognized still.. but who cares?

Method:
Installed with JaS 10.4.8 Intel/AMD SSE3 SSE2. Before install reconfigured the BIOS to increase Video Buffer from 2MB to 8MB (press F2 during boot and selected Integrated Devices and change the Video Buffer. Save changes and then reboot). If you don't increase the buffer you end up with about 16 shades of grey which are unreadable. So booted of the DVD and done a standard install. Rebooted into 10.4.8. Graphics at 1024x728, sound and ethernet not working. Ethernet patched by following instructions on the forum. This machine has a 865 graphics chipset and VESA 3 according to Darwin on Boot. However QE etc aren't supported. If you read this forum carefully you'll discover that there are no Apple kext files for the 865 in 10.4.8 and the ones which shipped with 10.4.1 do not work with later versions of the OS. (kext is a driver basically). However you can increase your video resolution by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist to be the same as the following:

The line <string>1280x1024x32</string> specifies the resolution as being 1280x1024 at 32bit colour. Change as needs be but as far as I know it only supports 4:3 aspect ratios. I done the standard chown and chmod. though you can just run repair permissions from disk utility. In theory you should have to add @75 after the 32 to specify the refresh rate in hertz, however all this done for me was produce a black screen with an error saying this resolution can't be displayed. I strongly suggest you turn on remote login and have a machine handy to ssh into OS X to change the file if the settings aren't working or sort out MacDrive to access the HFS+ filesystem from Windows to change the file. Of course still no QE and if you want that you'll need to buy a compatible PCI video card and install it. However it is reasonably usable at the proper resolution without QE.
To get sound to come out of stereo speakers, go to Utilities, Audio MIDI Setup, and select the AC97 output (Properties for.. second item). Select 6 channel (6ch-16bit) and click Configure Speakers. Set left to channel 3 and right to channel 6. Apply, then Done. Oddly this didn't work at first, after I loaded the iphone ad of the apple website and played that back I got sound but only through QT and not the system or itunes. Going back to the the above and reseting the channels to 3 and 6 then resulted in system sound. yeah.

I really don't know if this makes any difference, just thought I should mention it.
I also get that bug where clicking 'about this mac' crashed finder.
The video card 'RAGE128 ULTRA 16MB LOW PROFILE', also has a few issues. I'm not sure if QE works,
I also get vram errors when trying to run Blender 3d. .

Another install:Mine installed just fine. I had a problem with some devices when I first tried installing. I swapped out my processor and it is all fine. My box is just one I found gutted with only the mobo. So I installed all of my hardware: Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB, P4 2.4GHz (Northwood, Mac shows it as 3.0GHz), 768 DDR PC2700, CD drive I gutted from a dead Lacie drive, Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM ATA Hard Drive, Audigy Sound Card, and a Realtek 10/100 Ethernet card. I have yet to test everything, but so far it's fine except the network card.

A complete install guide from start to finish can be found here: How_to_install_10.4.8_on_Dell_Dimension_8250
OS Version: JaS 10.4.8 Intel/AMD combo SSE2/SSE3' DVD
One important note: for those considering which OS Version to download, I would like to explain that I was unable to get the Kalyway Leopard 10.5.1 intel SSE2 and SSE3 DVD working with the Dell Dimension 8250 as the installer would begin the boot up for cd and eventually crash before reaching the installer. I was unable to find a solution to this problem so I have, in the end, opted for a working 10.4.8 install. While you may be loosing some of the nice extras provided with Leopard such as Time Machine and Cover Flow.. The system requirements of Tiger and the hardware inside the Dell Dimension 8250 are much more inline with each other, making for a far more responsive and stable machine. I am not discouraging you from experimenting with Leopard installs, merely giving a word of caution.

Method:
Installed from Jas 10.4.6 DVD. Checked the Sigmatel audio patch (to get sound) and Intel Patches. Not SSE 2 patch and not Intel GMA 900 patch. Updated using Jas 10.4.7.
Then I followed this guide [4] to update to 10.4.8 successfully.
After that I used this guide to install the graphics card [5] and turned the computer off. Next I put in the 7600 gs, hooked up to my two monitors and booted.
Finally to fix the network card I used the advice given in the forth post in this thread [6]
After these changes I rebooted and installed all the Apple updates. Now everything is perfect.

Pentium D 840 (3.2ghz | Dual Core, SSE2, SSE3, EM64T)- both cores work
Intel 950 GMA video card onboard- works without any patches or work. VGA- all modes work to 1080P. Turns off automatically when other card is inserted.
4GB Ram 4 DIMM 533 MHz

[7]MSI 7600 GS 256 mb with HDMI and DVI ports. This is the only low profile Nvidia card with a 128bit Memory Interface. The HDMI works just as a DVI port does. Have not tried S-video port as I took it off to make card fit. VGA via DVI to VGA adapter works. Both autodectects resolutions beyond 1080P. Only downside is that it lacks a bracket for low profile set-up- had to make one of my own - and that it takes 20 secs for the monitors to initialize during boot leaving you with black screen. Added 30 points on average on Xbench score compared to GMA950. . . .

If you are using a JaS DVD or your own home-brew, make the following changes manually with a text editor like BBEdit or TextWrangler to get a better driver.(this method appears to work better than the multiple 'IOPCIPrimaryMatch' entries)

HDD: 2x 160Gb Seagate Barracuda HDDs
GFX: Nvidia GeForce 6600GT
OPTICAL: LG DVD-RW (DL/RAM)
NET: Marvell Yukon Gigabit (88E8001)
Method:
Standard install using JaS 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 DVD, only selecting Intel options but also selecting natit nvidia drivers.
The only thing that didnt work was the onboard Gigabit network, this was solved through the skge.kext package from the guys at insanely mac, which can be obtained here:

Sound works, Video works a treat, fast and snappy :)

Problems:
The only thing that does not work fully is i cannot access USB flash drives, however im sure there is an easy fix for that.
Reason
The BIOS doesn't properly enable legacy USB which in turn doesn't allow flash drives to be treated as hard drives.
Update
Problem is fixed, if you have an Asus P4P800-SE motherboard you need to enable legacy support and disable USB 2.0. Then at least i know it worked for me.
Enjoy :)

Install Process
Install using JaS 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 DVD, however it only worked by selecting AMD patch option for some reason even though im using a Intel P4 CPU.
The install will also only work in safe mode.. a normal boot will result in the 'you need to reboot your computer' dialog. On this hardware everything seemed to work fine, computer seems to have no problems mounting Ipods, USB zip drives, CD's, DVD's and extra hard drives.
Although my prefered way to use OSx86 is the JAS 10.4.8 DVD, if you have more free time you can try a different method that requires your a lot more savy with computers
Here is a guide to this way.. http://www.perfectw.org/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=3275&p=11266&sid=7065be94cd0fa9dfed11c007a67eece6

Helpful Notes
- computer will only boot or install in safe mode with this hardware!!! In order to install in safe mode after inserting the JaS 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 DVD press F8 when the dialog appears
and then type '-x' without the quotes to install OSx86 in safe mode. After you have finished the installation and your computer reboots and the Darwin screen appears type '-x' again
in order to boot OSX 10.4.8 into safe mode. Although I would prefer not to have to boot in safe mode the only differnces i've found in safe mode are the words 'Safe Mode' at the
Login Screen, also the search function of Finder seems to be disabled.

- Additional startup options at the Darwin prompt include '-s' for single user mode and '-v' for verbose mode.
- While shuting the computer down it tends to just shutdown the OS the then halt the hard drives but keep power to all other components running..
i dont know if this is specific to my computer but it may be a problem.
- However the only real problem seems to be a lack of audio support for my hardware. the problem just seems to be driver related and I'm working on it.
I will post about it when I have a solution..
If this works for you your computer will run Mac OS X 10.4.8 without much problem, If you run into any
just search around on this site and you'll probably find the answer. If anything i've written seems unclear or doesnt make sense I apoligize, I wrote and posted
